Squash Ball Colours Explained:

What do they mean and which should you use?

If you've ever walked into a squash centre or pro shop in Australia and seen a bunch of balls with different coloured dots on them — blue, red, yellow — you might’ve wondered what the difference is. Don't worry, you're not alone.

Each coloured dot on a squash ball represents its bounce level and speed, helping players pick the right ball for their skill level, playing conditions, and even the temperature — which is especially relevant here in Australia where court temps can vary a lot.

Here’s a simple breakdown so you know exactly which squash ball is right for your game.

1.    Blue Dot – Beginner / Junior

Super bouncy and fast. Perfect for kids, newcomers, or anyone still getting the hang of squash.

  • Best for: Beginners, juniors

  • Why use it? It stays in the air longer and gives you more time to reach the ball

  • Great for: Casual games or cool outdoor courts

2.    Red Dot Improver / Intermediate

A good step up from the blue ball as you gain confidence and control.

  • Best for: Recreational players or those transitioning from beginner level

  • Bounce: Medium-high

  • Great for: Players who are starting to rally consistently

3.    Single Yellow DotClub Level / Advanced

Less bounce, more challenge. Ideal for competitive social players or regular club players.

  • Best for: Players with solid technique and fitness

  • Bounce: Low

  • Good to know: Needs a bit of warming up to bounce properly

4.    Double Yellow Dot Professional / Competition Standard

This is the official ball used in professional matches, and it’s not easy.

  • Best for: Advanced players or serious competitors

  • Bounce: Very low

  • Speed: Very slow

  • Only use if: You can hit hard and keep a rally going

  • Hot tip: On colder Aussie courts (especially in winter), this ball can feel dead unless fully warmed up

Final Tip: Warm It Up!

Squash balls need to be warmed up before they bounce properly, especially the yellow dot types. Hit a few hard rallies at the start of your game, and you’ll notice the bounce improving quickly.

Whether you're just starting or gearing up for a tournament, using the right ball for your level and conditions can make a huge difference to your game — and how much you enjoy it.
